Hyde New Homes’ shared ownership scheme has enabled Tony, 29, and his partner Tom, 30, to buy their forever home. The couple, who both work for British Airways, recently moved into their three bedroom, two bathroom waterfront home at Rochester Riverside in Kent, after renting locally for four years.

With plans to start a family, Tony and Tom’s vision was for a home where they could stay long term and with space for them to grow into. As the deposit required to buy a suitable property on the open market was prohibitive, they started looking into shared ownership schemes which would enable them to buy a percentage equity share of a home which was affordable to them and pay a subsidised rent on the remaining value.

After hearing about a new development of shared ownership apartments under construction in Rochester available through Hyde New Homes, the couple registered on the website.

The next step was to speak with a specialist mortgage adviser recommended by Hyde New Homes. Having considered their options, the couple decided to take a 30 year mortgage. “This way we don’t overstretch ourselves while also owning the maximum we could afford,” explained Tony.

Tony and Tom are now looking to the future, content they have taken their first step onto the property ladder.

“Our home offers us all the space we need and is beautifully finished,” said Tony. “The square footage is very generous and feels more spacious than many houses we’d viewed.”

In a waterfront setting, the development at Rochester Riverside includes a supermarket, a café and a hotel plus a newly regenerated 5km riverside walk. A new primary school will also open in 2021.

“There’s a wonderful community atmosphere amongst the residents,” said Tom. “As we all moved in around the same time, there’s a real bond between us.”

Looking ahead, the couple plan to take weekend breaks in London. The train station is practically on their doorstep and Rochester has a regular fast service to London, with journeys taking just 36 minutes.

For now, the couple are enjoying exploring the historic city of Rochester. “There are lots of lovely independent restaurants and our plan is to work our way along the high street eventually and try them all!” said Tom.
