The Birth of Kodak in Harrow
The story begins in 1891 when Kodak opened its first manufacturing facility outside the United States in Wealdstone, Harrow. At the time, the area consisted largely of farmland, but the arrival of the American photography firm marked the beginning of a period of transformation.
Initially, the factory focused on developing and printing photographs before expanding into the production of photographic paper and film rolls. As demand for photography grew during the early twentieth century, so did the Kodak Works, establishing Harrow as an important centre for innovation.
The factory helped attract new residents to the area and played a major role in shaping the local community.
During World War II, the factory supported the war effort with materials for military photography and even helped 156 employees’ children escape the Blitz by sending them to stay with families in the US.
By the 1950s, Kodak Harrow was at its peak. Spanning 55 acres and employing around 6,000 people, it was one of the largest employers in Northwest London.
The Kodak chimney became a familiar sight on the Harrow skyline. It served as an iconic landmark and symbol of the area’s industrial heritage.
The Start of a New Chapter
As digital photography began to rise in the industry, demand for traditional film products declined. Production at the Harrow factory gradually reduced throughout the 2000s, with photographic film manufacturing ending in 2005. After more than a century of operation, the Kodak Works eventually closed in 2016, bringing an end to 125 years of history in Harrow.
Today, the former Kodak site has been transformed into Eastman Village, with over 2,000 new homes set around six generous acres of parkland.
The village was carefully designed to honour the site’s heritage while creating a vibrant new destination for modern living.
Original elements of the Kodak Works have been incorporated into the development, including the restoration of the historic Kodak chimney and the retention of heritage brickwork throughout the neighbourhood.
