From Renting to Owning with Lower Monthly Costs
For 28-year-old George, Shared Ownership has made buying his first home not only possible, but significantly cheaper than renting after purchasing a 25% share of the two-bedroom coach house-style home at Spring Acres with a deposit of £10,500 and moved in May 2026.
“When I worked everything out, it was honestly a no-brainer. I’m paying hundreds of pounds less every month than we were when renting, and instead of paying someone else’s mortgage, I’m investing in my own future.”
Having rented nearby for several years while trying to save enough to buy, George had almost accepted that owning a home in the area they loved would have to wait. Instead, Shared Ownership has enabled George to step onto the property ladder years earlier than he expected, while dramatically reducing his monthly outgoings.
Today, the combined mortgage and rent payments are around £330 less each month than they were paying in private rent. Thanks to the home’s solar panels, they are also saving around a further £100 a month on electricity bills, leaving him more than £400 better off every month.
With Shared Ownership, buyers purchase an initial share of a property and pay a subsidised rent on the part they don’t yet own. This allows you to step onto the property ladder with a smaller deposit. At any time, you can buy more shares through a process called staircasing – right up to full ownership.
“The house just felt so much bigger than anything else I’d seen. Having a two-bedroom coach house with its own car port gave me the extra space I wanted, and it just felt like somewhere I could really make my own.”

George says the buying process was much more straightforward than he expected.
He shares: “I thought buying a home would feel overwhelming, but the whole Shared Ownership process was really clear. I had my mortgage offer within a month, and after that it was just a case of waiting for completion. Everything moved much quicker than I imagined, thanks to the seamless digital buying journey.”
Looking back, George believes Shared Ownership has given him something much more valuable than simply a house.
“It’s given me stability, security and the chance to build a future. It feels like I can finally start living my life instead of constantly wondering when I’d ever be able to afford my own place. I’d absolutely encourage anyone who’s been putting off buying to look into Shared Ownership because it made what felt impossible become reality.”
