Jay has officially stepped onto the property ladder – marking the final milestone in his five-year sobriety journey. After years of change, this moment represents a new chapter.
After renting the same house in Brighton with his three best friends for 12 years, he knew it was time for a space of his own. He purchased a one-bedroom apartment with a balcony at Bluebell Heights, in Coldean, near Brighton, through shared ownership, securing a 50% share with a £13,500 deposit.
With Shared Ownership, buyers purchase an initial share of a property and pay a subsidised rent on the part they don’t yet own. This means you can step onto the property ladder with a smaller deposit. In addition, you can buy more shares through a process called staircasing – right up to full ownership.

The journey to find the right home wasn’t without a pause. After viewing another property that didn’t feel right, Jay took a break. “My partner and I have recently got into hiking – there’s the South Downs to explore and a brilliant 8k trail right behind Bluebell Heights, which takes us around a nature reserve, which we love doing in our downtime.
My mental health has improved so much knowing I’ve been able to achieve this. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
